STUDY GRAMMAR, SHOULD WE?

 

We cannot deny that we are familiar with English since we were kids. And I believe that most of what we knew were related to grammar. For example the words like I, You, We and They, we understand the meanings and we know that they are what we call Subject Pronoun. Other examples are we obviously know what are noun, adjective and adverb. We cannot force everyone to study English without studying grammar anymore because we are non-native speaker of the language and we do not live in an English country. So, I am personally okay to study Grammar in acquiring English language proficiency as long as we do not focus on the grammar materials only. Practicing our knowledge in speaking, writing, listening and reading must take big part of our learning process. I will tell you how I enjoyed my English learning even if I should study many grammar items.

It began when I went to Pare in 2015 to study English in Basic English Course (BEC) which is the oldest course place in Pare, Kediri. After the registration, I had to wait until one month before the course began. So I decided to take a one month special for studying grammar in POKER Course (one of English Course in Pare). I was so satisfied of the teacher’s lesson, like I got whole basic grammar when I was with him. And that was my strongest basic for my English. Even though, the program was just one month learning, I felt I improved significantly beyond my last study in high school.

According to my first one month study in POKER, I can say that we have to study intensively to get the best result. That is reason why when we love movie and we watch every day we can increase our listening a lot. We love what we do and we do it persistently.  My study was very intensive. I learn English every day and it took more than 6 hours a day. In this one month, I just study grammar, new vocabularies and little speaking practices. And grammar took most part of my study.

However, my study was not enough, the grammar lesson was already in my head but I could not speak fluently. After my study in POKER, my time to study in BEC came. I was very excited that I found a very good environment for my English. Everybody was motivated to master English, we spoke English every time. After 3 months studying, we were forbidden to speak Bahasa Indonesia even a single word. The teachers and the students spoke full English. Even though the teachers were explaining a grammar material, they still used English. That was how consistent the course was.

If you intend to study in BEC, you will not be taught a very deep grammar material as POKER Course gives. However, BEC will teach you much better than your school (because School has a limited time). BEC will still teach you various grammar materials needed and I bet you that you will not get those materials in your class in senior high school. It is little bit different from POKER, BEC is designed to direct you to  practice your language ability as much as possible. They teach you listening, speaking, reading, and writing perfectly. The grammar that you study will be directly used in the daily practices. That is the value of BEC. BEC really made me confident with my English. I love the way BEC teaches but I also still love how deep and unique POKER teaches the grammar.

I can conclude that you can study grammar but you have to practice it more and more in your reading, writing, listening and especially speaking activity. Mr Kalend, my teacher and founder of BEC said, ”You can speak English or You are successful with your study when the native speakers or foreigners understand what you say and you understand what they say”. No matter, how excellent your grammar score is, you still have to practice and increase your speaking ability. Because in the very beginning, people use language to communicate verbally whereas written language is only the development of verbal language.

FACING THE HORRIFIC TOEFL TEST

  I took TOEFL test in UIN Antasari for 2 times. I think my last score is good or at least enough. I forget my score but the latest is around 500 and the latest is higher than the first test score. My first TOEFL test result which I took in Pare was around 400, but the test was just about written test. SIMPANG LIMA GUMUL

Kediri is one of the old cities that has lots of charms. Kediri posesses many good places ranging from buildings like temples, the natural tourism place such as Mount Kelud, education places like the Kampung Inggris of Pare and more. One of the nice, spacious and very interesting places is the Simpang Lima Gumul monument. I can say that Simpang Lima Gumul are really big. The entire SLG area is approximately 37 hectares. Especially for the monument, it has an area of 804 square meters with a height of 25 meters. These number actually show a symbol of the anniversary of Kediri Regency, namely March 25, 804 AD. To reach the location of the monument, 4 underground tunnels are provided under the SLG ring road on the ground. The tunnels are connected to the parking area.
